Category: casual American food
Quick take: good vibes, solid food
Best item: vegan chili fries
Earle’s on Crenshaw is an institution in South Los Angeles, starting in 1984 as a hotdog cart, and eventually becoming a brick and mortar in 1992. This is not an all vegan establishment, but they offer a good selection of vegan items. More importantly, they are proud of their vegan items. That night, the chef, who I believe to be one of the co-founders was wearing a Beyond Meat tee shirt and hat. When he saw my all vegan order of links and vegan chili fries, he made a vegan burger for me to sample. The service is friendly and welcoming, and they seemed to know the other patrons, giving the whole place a very community vibe.
You can customize all their hot dogs/links with a variety of toppings. We got the vegan link ($8.49) and vegan chili cheese fries ($11.74).

The food is all around solid. French fries are well fried and crispy, the chili is a classic American chili and a generous portion. The link is a commercial product of some kind, but the toppings are classic and fresh. Remarkably, we didn’t feel awful after eating this heavy food.
